Kalamata holidays offer a genuinely different Greek experience from the typical island resort. The capital of the Messenia region in the southern Peloponnese, Kalamata is a real Greek city rather than a tourist resort, with a lively daily life, excellent markets, a beautiful waterfront and easy access to some of the most spectacular and least-visited scenery in Greece.
The Mani peninsula to the south, a wild, rocky finger of land where Byzantine tower-houses stand in medieval villages and the sea is extraordinarily clear, is one of Greece’s most dramatic and rewarding landscapes.
Kalamata city has a pleasant seafront promenade, a renovated waterfront area and a good selection of restaurants serving the excellent local produce for which the region is famous. Kalamata olives, one of the most prized varieties in the world, are grown throughout the surrounding area, and the local olive oil is outstanding.
The kastro (castle) on the hill above the old town provides views over the gulf and the city. The Archaeological Museum has impressive finds from the region’s rich Mycenaean and Classical history.
The Mani is one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Greece, a stark, rocky peninsula where the sun-bleached stone tower houses of medieval warrior clans still stand in abandoned villages, where the sea is turquoise and incredibly clear, and where an ancient, fierce independence is still palpable in the landscape and the people.
The coastal villages of Stoupa and Kardamyli are both excellent bases for exploring the area, with good beaches and an authentic atmosphere quite different from the commercial Greek island resorts.
The beaches of the Messenia region are among the finest on mainland Greece. The long sandy beach of Kalamata city itself is pleasant and popular with locals. Stoupa, about 50 kilometres south on the Mani coast, has two excellent sandy bays.
The remote sandy bays of the outer Mani, accessible by car, include some of the least-visited beautiful beaches in Greece. Finikounda, further south-west on the coast towards Pylos, is one of the most rewarding of these quieter bases.
Kalamata has its own airport (KLX) with direct charter flights from several UK airports during the summer season. The airport is small but well connected in season.
Alternatively, Athens airport is around a three-hour drive from Kalamata, and driving through the Peloponnese to reach the area allows visits to Corinth, Nafplio and Mystras along the way. For peace of mind when booking, always check your holiday is ABTA protected.

April to June and September to October are ideal for Kalamata. The spring is beautiful, with wildflowers covering the Mani hillsides. June offers warm beach weather with relatively few tourists. September and October are excellent for combining beach and sightseeing. July and August can be very hot but the sea is at its warmest.
