Away from the Hotel Zone, the downtown area of Cancun (El Centro) is where the majority of the city’s 900,000 permanent residents live and work. Cancun International Airport (CUN) is one of the busiest airports in Latin America and is served by direct long-haul flights from London Heathrow with Virgin Atlantic, as well as connecting services via Amsterdam, Miami, New York and other hubs. Flight times from London direct are approximately 10 to 11 hours. Charter flights from regional UK airports serve Cancun during the peak winter season. Cancun’s Nichupte Lagoon — the sheltered body of water separating the Hotel Zone from the mainland — is ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding and mangrove boat tours, offering a quieter counterpoint to the open Caribbean. Sunset catamaran cruises from the Hotel Zone marinas are a popular addition to any Cancun holiday, combining snorkelling at reef sites with food and drink on the return journey. The El Rey archaeological zone at the southern end of the Hotel Zone provides a convenient and atmospheric Mayan ruin visit without the full-day commitment of a Chichen Itza excursion.
The best time for Cancun holidays is from November to April during the Caribbean dry season, when rainfall is minimal, temperatures are warm but not oppressively hot, and the hurricane risk is low. December and January are peak season — prices are higher but the weather is at its best and the resort atmosphere is at full capacity. February and March offer excellent conditions with slightly lower prices outside the half-term and school holiday peaks.
July and August are the hottest and most humid months and fall within the Atlantic hurricane season, but Cancun holidays in summer are popular with families during the school holidays and the sea temperature is at its warmest. The Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) is a 23-kilometre sandbar island connected to mainland Cancun by two bridges. Chichen Itza is approximately 180 kilometres from Cancun — a journey of about two to two and a half hours by coach. The trips run daily throughout the year and are very well established and competitively priced.
For Cancun holidays where independence and flexibility are priorities, hiring a car and driving to Chichen Itza independently via the toll road gives the freedom to arrive early (before the coach groups), spend as long as you wish and take alternative routes via colonial towns such as Valladolid on the return journey.
