The Playa de la Herradura stretches for approximately 1.5 kilometres along the floor of the bay, with fine dark Mediterranean sand backed by the resort’s promenade, restaurants and low-rise apartment buildings. The beach is wide, clean and equipped with sun loungers, parasols, beach bars and lifeguard coverage throughout the summer season. The circular geometry of the bay means the water is noticeably calmer than the open coast, making it particularly suitable for young children and for water sports that require controlled conditions.
The water clarity in the bay is exceptional — visibility can reach 20 metres or more on the best days, revealing a seabed of rock, sand and dense populations of Mediterranean fish species including sea bream, octopus, moray eels and occasional sightings of sunfish offshore. The bay’s sheltered position also means sea temperatures are among the highest on the Costa Tropical — typically 24–26 °C in peak summer — and the sea remains comfortably warm for swimming through October.
At the western end of the beach, the rocky headland of Punta de la Mona drops steeply into the sea and provides the most dramatic diving terrain in the area. This headland, together with the Cerro Gordo cliff to the east, frames the bay and provides the natural barriers that create its famous sheltered conditions. The Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, which rises steeply from the coast immediately behind La Herradura, provides excellent walking and hiking for all fitness levels. The trail from La Herradura up to the Cerro Gordo viewpoint (around 2 hours return) is the most popular and gives extraordinary views along the Costa Tropical in both directions — on clear days the African coast is visible across the Strait of Gibraltar. More challenging mountain routes lead into the high sierra, where pine and oak forest give way to bare limestone ridges above 2,000 metres.
The nearby town of Almuñécar (8 kilometres east) is the main commercial and cultural hub for La Herradura visitors — its covered market, old town tapas bars, Roman ruins, castle and aquarium all complement the quieter beach experience at La Herradura and are worth a half-day excursion. The town of Nerja (20 kilometres west, just inside Málaga province) is another excellent day trip, with the famous Balcón de Europa viewpoint, impressive sea caves and beautiful narrow beaches backed by white cliffs.
The Alhambra palace in Granada is approximately 65 kilometres north — around 55 minutes by hire car on the A-44 motorway. Combining La Herradura holidays with a day or half-day in Granada is one of the most rewarding experiences southern Spain offers — the Alhambra is one of the world’s greatest buildings and Granada’s Moorish quarter (Albaicín) and cathedral are not far behind. Book Alhambra tickets several weeks in advance during the summer months.
La Herradura shares the exceptional subtropical microclimate of the Costa Tropical — one of the warmest and sunniest climates in mainland Europe. The sheltered bay position means wind is less of a factor here than on the exposed open coast (though it provides excellent conditions for windsurfing when it does blow). Summer temperatures average 28–30 °C with very high sunshine hours. The sea is typically warm enough to swim from May through October.
La Herradura holidays are excellent at almost any time of year. Spring brings wildflowers to the hillsides and the best conditions for walking. Summer peak (July–August) is busy with Spanish and European visitors but the bay is large enough to absorb them without feeling crowded. September and October are arguably the finest months — the sea is at its warmest, the light is golden and the resort returns to its natural unhurried pace. Winter is genuinely mild and La Herradura functions as a year-round residential community with most restaurants and facilities open throughout the year.
La Herradura is served by the same airports as Almuñécar. Málaga Airport (AGP) is approximately 85 kilometres west — around 1 hour by hire car on the A-7 coastal motorway. Málaga has extensive year-round UK flight connections from Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, TUI and many other carriers. Granada Airport (GRX) is around 65 kilometres north and approximately 55 minutes by car — a useful option for visitors combining the coast with a Granada city break.
A hire car is the recommended way to arrive at and explore La Herradura, as the resort has limited public transport and many of the best day trips (Nerja, Granada, inland villages) require independent mobility. The A-7 coastal motorway connects La Herradura with both Málaga and Almeria efficiently, and the N-340 coast road provides a slower but more scenic alternative past Nerja and the Balcón de Europa.
La Herradura’s accommodation is deliberately low-rise and low-key, reflecting the resort’s character as a small village rather than a developed tourist destination. The main options are apartment complexes and small hotels along the promenade and the streets immediately behind the beach. The Hotel El Bullicio and several aparthotel complexes provide the main hotel-standard accommodation. Self-catering apartments in low-rise blocks near the beach are the most popular choice for independent visitors and are very reasonably priced compared to equivalent quality on the Costa del Sol.
UK tour operator coverage of La Herradura is very limited — the village is primarily known to diving enthusiasts, windsurfers and independent travellers who have discovered it by word of mouth or through specialist publications. Specialist Andalusia and Costa Tropical operators are the most reliable UK booking channel. Direct booking with local apartments and hotels is also very straightforward and often more economical than through intermediaries.

The two resorts are 8 kilometres apart by road, and a direct coastal walk is not possible along the entire route due to the cliffs and natural park terrain between them. However, hikers can reach the Cerro Gordo viewpoint above La Herradura and enjoy spectacular coast views in both directions. The easiest way to visit Almuñécar from La Herradura is by hire car (15 minutes) or the local bus service that connects the two resorts and runs several times a day.
La Herradura holidays are excellent for families who enjoy a quiet, safe beach environment. The sheltered circular bay provides very calm conditions for young children, and the gently shelving beach is safe for confident child swimmers. The glass-bottom boat trips and snorkelling in the rocky sections at the bay’s edges are memorable activities for older children.
