Fuengirola’s beach runs continuously for 8 kilometres — one of the longest sandy beach fronts on the Costa del Sol. The beach divides into named sections from west to east: Playa de Santa Amalia, Los Boliches, Fuengirola, Carvajal and Torreblanca.
All sections carry Blue Flag status for water quality. Lifeguards operate on all main beaches from June to September. Sun loungers, parasols, accessible ramps, showers and beach bar services are standard throughout the season.
The central Fuengirola beach opposite the main promenade is the busiest and best-serviced section. Los Boliches to the east is slightly more local in character with good chiringuito restaurants. Carvajal near the eastern end is the quietest section — wide, clean and popular with families wanting more space.
The beach in Fuengirola is genuinely excellent for families with young children — calm and shallow for some distance, with lifeguards, accessible facilities and beach bars with shaded seating. The conditions are as good as anywhere on the coast.
The Bioparc is Fuengirola’s standout attraction and one of the best zoological parks in Spain. Unlike traditional zoos, it operates on the immersive principle — animals live in barrier-free environments that replicate their natural habitats, with visitors moving through the spaces with minimal separation.
The park covers Africa, Madagascar and the Indochina biome, with gorillas, chimpanzees, manatees, komodo dragons, white tigers and Sumatran tigers among the headline residents. The gorilla habitat is particularly impressive — a large, naturalistic environment with viewing points at multiple levels.
The Bioparc won the prestigious Iberian award for best zoological institution and consistently ranks among the top family attractions on the Costa del Sol. It suits children of all ages and takes a full half-day to visit properly. Book tickets in advance online to avoid queuing at the entrance.
The Castillo de Sohail sits on a rocky promontory at the western end of Fuengirola beach — a Moorish fortress with views along the entire coastline. Originally built in the 10th century and reconstructed in the 16th century, it is one of the best-preserved coastal fortresses on the Costa del Sol.
Entry is free and the castle is open year-round. The battlements offer excellent panoramic views over Fuengirola, the beach and the surrounding hills. The castle hosts an outdoor summer concert series on its lower terraces — check local listings for events during your stay.
The walk along the beach promenade from central Fuengirola to the castle takes around 20 minutes. A pleasant way to spend a morning is to walk west to the castle, visit the interior and return along the beach.
The Paseo Marítimo running behind the main beach is one of the best-maintained promenades on the Costa del Sol — wide, tree-lined and backed by a continuous row of restaurants, cafés and bars at a consistent quality level.
The town centre behind the promenade has a good mix of Spanish and international shops, a covered market and several tapas bar streets. The Calle de la Cruz is the main pedestrian restaurant street. The Plaza de la Constitución and the Parque Municipal are pleasant for morning coffee and people-watching.
Fuengirola has a large and well-established British expat community, which means English-language services, familiar supermarket products and British pub culture are all readily available for those who want them.
Fuengirola has a wide range of dining options across every budget and cuisine. The promenade restaurants tend towards international menus — serviceable but not remarkable. The best food is in the streets behind the seafront and in the Los Boliches district east of the centre.
Los Boliches has a more local character than the main resort — the chiringuito restaurants along the beach serve excellent fresh fish. Calle de los Palos in Los Boliches has several good tapas bars popular with Spanish residents. The Thursday market at Fuengirola is excellent for fresh produce and prepared food.
Fuengirola has established itself as one of the most gastronomically diverse resorts on the coast — Indian, Thai, Japanese, Moroccan and Latin American restaurants all operate alongside traditional Andalusian cooking. The range reflects the international character of the long-stay resident community.
Fuengirola has a lively but family-friendly nightlife — more relaxed than Torremolinos or Benalmadena but with plenty of bars, live music and clubs to suit younger visitors. The Calle de la Cruz and the beach promenade are the main evening areas.
The resort has established Irish bars, English pubs and a karaoke circuit popular with the British holidaymaker demographic. The more Spanish nightlife scene operates later — bars in the Calle Larga and the Los Boliches backstreets stay open until the early hours at weekends.
Fuengirola is excellently positioned for day trips across the Costa del Sol. The Cercanías train connects Fuengirola west to Torremolinos (15 mins), Benalmadena (10 mins), Málaga airport (20 mins) and Málaga city (35 mins).
Mijas Pueblo is 8 kilometres north — the famous white village with burro taxis and panoramic views. Buses run from Fuengirola bus station. Marbella is 25 kilometres west with Puerto Banús and the glamorous marina.
Granada and the Alhambra are 110 kilometres north — about 90 minutes by car or coach. Book timed tickets to the Nasrid Palaces in advance. Ronda is 75 kilometres inland — the gorge and the bullring are worth a day’s excursion.
Málaga Airport is 20–25 kilometres east of Fuengirola — around 25–30 minutes by road. The Cercanías suburban train connects the airport directly to Fuengirola station in 20 minutes — an excellent alternative to the coach transfer. Trains run every 20 minutes.
Fuengirola station is in the centre of the resort, close to most hotels. The train line west to Benalmadena and Torremolinos, and east to Málaga city, makes Fuengirola one of the best-connected resorts on the coast.
Fuengirola has a good range of water sports available from the main beach throughout the season. Jet skiing, parasailing and paddleboard hire operate from the central Fuengirola beach section. Pedalos and kayak hire are popular with families. The calm, shallow bay gives ideal conditions for children learning to swim or for first-time paddleboarding.
The Cercanías train to Benalmadena (10 mins) gives Fuengirola visitors easy access to the Calamorro cable car — the most dramatic viewpoint experience on the central Costa del Sol. The dolphin watching trips from Puerto Marina at Benalmadena depart regularly and offer some of the best wildlife experiences on the coast.
Fuengirola is a genuine year-round destination — the Bioparc, the Cercanías connections and the mild winter climate make it worth visiting even in December and January. Summer (June–September) is peak beach season, with July and August bringing the full resort experience — busy beach, lively promenade and all attractions in operation.
May and October are excellent shoulder months — warm enough for the beach, noticeably less crowded and better value for accommodation. The Fuengirola International Folk Festival in July and the Feria del Rosario in early October are the two main annual events. The October fair is particularly well-attended.
Fuengirola has one of the most competitive hotel markets on the Costa del Sol — a large number of three and four-star hotels and apartment complexes across a wide price range. The main hotel zones are the beachfront (highest prices, best beach access), the town centre and the Los Boliches district east of the centre.
The Los Boliches area tends to be quieter and slightly less expensive than the main resort beach strip, with a more local character and excellent access to the fishing village restaurants. It is 10–15 minutes’ walk from the central beach. Many visitors find it a more pleasant base than the main resort zone.
All-inclusive hotels are well-established in Fuengirola — several large hotels operate full all-inclusive programmes. These suit families or those who want a predictable cost for the holiday. The Cercanías train means you are never trapped in an all-inclusive if you want to explore.
Fuengirola’s hotel market is one of the most competitive on the Costa del Sol — high supply across the three and four-star range keeps prices reasonable even in summer. The best-located hotels are on the Paseo Marítimo facing the beach. The Los Boliches area east of the centre offers good value with a slightly more local character.
Several large resort hotels with kids’ clubs and pool complexes suit families with young children. The Cercanías train station in the centre of the resort is a major advantage — families staying in Fuengirola can access Torremolinos, Benalmadena and Málaga airport without needing a hire car for the main activities.

The two resorts are 10 minutes apart by train — easy to visit both during a single holiday. Fuengirola tends to be slightly quieter and better value for accommodation. Benalmadena has a livelier marina area and slightly more nightlife.
