Tivoli World is the largest amusement park on the Costa del Sol — a well-established family theme park set in landscaped gardens above Benalmadena Costa. The park has rides for all ages, from gentle carousels for young children to the Tornado and Python thrill rides, alongside live entertainment shows and flamenco performances.
The park operates primarily in the evenings in summer — a sensible approach in the Andalusian heat. Entry is affordable and the park rarely feels overwhelmingly crowded. The nightly entertainment programme includes live music, circus acts and the famous flamenco show that has been running for decades.
Adjacent to Tivoli World, the Sea Life aquarium and butterfly park add daytime family options. The combination of Tivoli, Sea Life and the butterfly park gives families a full day of entertainment without needing to leave the Benalmadena area.
Puerto Marina is one of the largest and most impressive marinas on the Mediterranean coast — a 1,100-berth facility developed in the 1980s that has become the most distinctive landmark of any Benalmadena holiday. The marina has won multiple awards for design and is genuinely beautiful — curved apartment blocks reflected in the water, restaurants on floating pontoons and a lively waterfront atmosphere.
Dolphin and whale watching trips depart regularly from Puerto Marina — one of the best activities available from any Costa del Sol resort. The Strait of Gibraltar waters are rich with bottlenose dolphins, pilot whales and occasional fin and sperm whales. Most trips last 2–3 hours and sightings are very frequent.
The marina is also the departure point for various sea excursions — glass-bottomed boat trips along the coast, fishing trips and private charter options. The waterfront restaurants and bars are popular for both lunch and evening dining throughout the season.
The Teleférico de Benalmadena cable car rises 800 metres from behind the resort to the summit of Calamorro mountain — offering extraordinary 360-degree views that, on clear days, encompass Gibraltar, the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and the entire Costa del Sol from Nerja to Estepona.
The cable car journey takes around 15 minutes each way. At the summit, birds of prey shows, mountain bike trails and a small restaurant are available. The views are outstanding and the experience is very different from the beach resort below.
The cable car is popular year-round but the clearest views are typically in winter and spring when the air is at its most transparent. In summer, heat haze can reduce visibility — early morning and late afternoon visits are best.
Benalmadena Costa has several kilometres of beaches running between the neighbouring resorts. The main beaches — Playa Santa Ana, Playa de Bil-Bil and Playa de Fuengirola boundary — are generally sandy with good facilities and Blue Flag water quality.
The beaches at Benalmadena are slightly narrower than the long stretches at Fuengirola and Torremolinos, but compensate with proximity to the marina and the Tivoli World attractions. The sea conditions are calm and suitable for families with young children.
The Playa de Arroyo de la Miel near the marina is one of the most conveniently placed — walkable from the marina restaurants and close to the Sea Life aquarium. All Benalmadena beaches are lifeguarded throughout the main season.
Benalmadena Pueblo sits 5 kilometres inland from the coast resort at around 200 metres altitude — a traditional Andalusian white village that predates the coast development by centuries. The village has genuine character: whitewashed houses, narrow streets, a traditional square and an archaeological museum with a good collection of pre-Columbian and local finds.
The Buddhist Stupa on the edge of the village — the largest in the western world at 33 metres — is an unexpected and striking landmark. Built in 2003 with Tibetan blessing, it houses sacred relics and is open for visits and meditation sessions.
The views from Benalmadena Pueblo down to the coast and out to sea are excellent — comparable to Mijas Pueblo but with significantly fewer visitors. Regular buses connect the pueblo to the coast resort.
Benalmadena has a wide range of dining options concentrated around the marina and the beach promenade. The marina restaurants are the best for quality — floating pontoon restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood with the boats as backdrop. Prices are moderate.
The beach promenade has a good selection of international restaurants. The Calle Bil-Bil and the streets behind the beach have more local tapas bars worth exploring for authentic Andalusian food at lower prices than the marina front.
Nightlife in Benalmadena is lively — the marina area stays busy late, and the resort has established bars and clubs catering to a younger international crowd. The casino in the Hotel Torrequebrada adds a more sophisticated evening option.
The Cercanías train connects Benalmadena to Torremolinos (5 mins east), Fuengirola (10 mins west), Málaga airport (15 mins) and Málaga city (25 mins). This makes Benalmadena one of the best-connected resorts for exploring the central Costa del Sol without a car.
Málaga city with the Picasso Museum and Alcazaba is 25 minutes by train. Marbella and Puerto Banús are 35 kilometres west by road or bus. Granada and the Alhambra are 90 minutes by car — book Nasrid Palace tickets well in advance.
Málaga Airport is 20 kilometres east of Benalmadena — around 20–25 minutes by road. The Cercanías train connects the airport to Arroyo de la Miel-Benalmadena station in 15 minutes. Transfers are included in most UK tour operator packages.
Benalmadena has an excellent range of activities beyond the main attractions. Water sports from the beach include jet skiing, parasailing and paddleboard hire — standard offerings throughout the main season. The marina is the better location for sea-based activities: fishing trips, glass-bottomed boat excursions and private sailing charters all depart from Puerto Marina.
The Sea Life Benalmadena aquarium adjacent to Tivoli World has an impressive shark tunnel, jellyfish display and the Rocky Shore section popular with families. It combines well with a Tivoli World visit for a full day of family entertainment without leaving the Benalmadena area.
The casino at Hotel Torrequebrada is one of the few functioning casinos on the Costa del Sol — an option for evening entertainment beyond the bars and restaurants. The Benalmadena Butterfly Park (Mariposario) is a popular daytime attraction — a tropical greenhouse containing hundreds of free-flying butterfly species.
June and September are the best months for Benalmadena holidays — excellent beach conditions, the resort is lively without August overcrowding and hotel prices are lower. Tivoli World opens nightly in summer and closes or reduces hours outside the main season — check dates if it is a priority for your visit.
The cable car and the pueblo are accessible year-round and arguably better in winter and spring when the air is clearest and the views from Calamorro summit reach furthest. Winter Benalmadena is quiet but pleasant — the marina restaurants remain open and the Cercanías train provides constant connections to Málaga city and the airport.
The Benalmadena International Kite Festival in May and the International Flamenco Competition in summer are the main annual cultural events. The kite festival on the Playa de Bil-Bil is colourful and family-friendly.
Benalmadena has a wide range of accommodation — from large four-star beach hotels to smaller aparthotels in the marina area and pueblo. The beach resort zone has the largest hotels and most all-inclusive options. The marina area is more boutique in character with smaller hotels and a livelier restaurant scene.
The Hotel Torrequebrada on the seafront is the most prestigious address — a five-star property with a casino, rooftop pool and excellent beachfront position. Several large Spanish chain hotels (Meliá, Sol, Barceló) operate competitive all-inclusive resorts in the main beach zone.
Benalmadena’s accommodation divides between the main coast resort zone (larger hotels, beach access, all-inclusive options), the marina area (smaller boutique hotels, best restaurants nearby) and the pueblo (a handful of rural-style hotels for those who prioritise the village setting over coast access).
