Nova Sancti Petri is one of the most complete beach and golf resort destinations on the Costa de la Luz — a modern, well-planned resort complex adjoining the municipality of Chiclana de la Frontera, with direct access to the magnificent Playa de la Barrosa, a series of championship golf courses, a full range of hotels and apartment complexes, and a relaxed, sun-drenched atmosphere that combines the natural beauty of the Atlantic coast with good quality resort facilities.
The resort takes its name from the ancient island of Sancti Petri — a small rocky islet visible from the beach, topped by the ruins of a castle that once guarded the mouth of the Sancti Petri channel. The islet is said to have housed a Roman and possibly Phoenician temple dedicated to Hercules, making it one of the most historically resonant spots on a coast that has been inhabited for over 3,000 years. Today, the islet is a protected natural area with a lighthouse and excellent birdwatching, and the Sancti Petri channel between the islet and the mainland is popular for birdwatching, kayaking and boat trips.

Beach bar (chiringuito) culture is strong along the Barrosa — the beach bars range from simple plastic-chair affairs serving grilled fish and cold beer to more sophisticated operations with proper menus, cushioned sunbeds and cocktail lists. The concentration of beach bars in the central section of the beach, near the main resort hotels, provides the social hub of the resort in summer. Early evening on the Barrosa, as the light softens and the beach empties, is one of the most pleasant experiences the Costa de la Luz offers.
Nova Sancti Petri has established itself as one of the most serious golf destinations on the Costa de la Luz, with several championship courses within easy reach of the resort. The Sancti Petri Hills Golf course — 18 holes, par 72, set in rolling terrain with Atlantic views — is directly associated with the resort development. The Campano Golf course nearby is another good option, with a layout through cork-oak and pine woodland. Both courses offer teaching academies with professional tuition for beginners and improvers.
The wider Cadiz province has some of Spain’s finest golf. Real Club de Golf Sotogrande — designed by Robert Trent Jones and one of the oldest and most prestigious clubs in Spain — is around 80 kilometres south. Montecastillo Golf Resort near Jerez, designed by Jack Nicklaus, is around 40 kilometres north. Valderrama, the Ryder Cup course, is around 85 kilometres south near Sotogrande. Nova Sancti Petri serves as an excellent central base for playing the full range of Cadiz province golf, with the mild Atlantic climate providing good playing conditions from March through November.
Boat trips to the Isla de Sancti Petri are one of the most atmospheric experiences available at the resort. The small rocky islet, with its lighthouse and castle ruins, sits at the mouth of the Sancti Petri channel about 800 metres offshore and can be reached by small water taxi from the channel-side jetty. The views from the islet back across the Barrosa to the resort — and south to the Atlantic horizon — are spectacular, and the wildlife interest is considerable: the waters around the islet are home to seahorses, octopus and numerous fish species.
The nearby town of Chiclana de la Frontera — the municipality that governs Nova Sancti Petri — is a pleasant Andalusian market town 10 kilometres inland with a good covered market, several excellent tapas bars and the atmospheric Ermita de Santa Ana hill viewpoint. Cadiz city is around 25 kilometres north — an outstanding day trip to one of Europe’s oldest and most dramatically situated cities, with a historic old town almost entirely surrounded by the Atlantic, an excellent covered market and superb seafood restaurants. Conil de la Frontera is 15 kilometres south along the coast, with its beautiful whitewashed old town and exceptional fresh tuna in season.
Water sports at Nova Sancti Petri are well-supported by the consistent Atlantic wind. Kitesurfing and windsurfing are popular on the Barrosa when the Levante blows, with equipment hire and tuition available from operators on the beach. Surfing is possible on the Barrosa when Atlantic swells build, and the calmer conditions in the Sancti Petri channel are ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding and guided birdwatching boat trips through the protected wetland.
Nova Sancti Petri has a warm Atlantic climate with hot summers and very mild winters, ideal for golf year-round. July and August bring temperatures of 28–30 °C with reliable sunshine; the Atlantic sea breeze makes outdoor activity comfortable throughout the day. The Levante east wind is a feature in summer — excellent for wind sports, occasionally annoying on exposed beach sections. Seville Airport (SVQ) is around 90 kilometres northeast (approximately 1 hour by car) and has wider year-round UK flight options — often the better gateway for winter golf breaks. A hire car is strongly recommended at Nova Sancti Petri, as the resort is a modern development designed around private transport and the best excursions (Cadiz, Conil, Jerez) require independent mobility. The A-48 coast road connects Nova Sancti Petri directly with Chiclana, Cadiz and the motorway network.

The main hotel concentration is in the central section of the Barrosa beach, with a strip of medium-to-large hotels offering direct beach access, pools, restaurants and the full range of resort facilities. The Playa de la Barrosa is long enough that different sections feel quite different in atmosphere — the northern end near Roche is quieter and more natural, while the central hotel section has more services and beach bar activity. For the golf courses, early morning tee times are advisable in July and August both to avoid the heat and to secure the most popular slots. Green fees and accommodation rates drop significantly from November to March, making the winter months an excellent value alternative for golf-focused visitors.
