The beach is divided into several sections by rocky outcrops, creating distinct areas with slightly different characters. The central section opposite the resort core is the busiest, with densely packed sunbeds, multiple watersports operators and easy access to beachside cafes and restaurants.
The eastern sections towards Matagorda are wider and less crowded — a better choice for Puerto del Carmen holidays seeking more space. The water is generally calm and clear, with conditions suitable for children and casual swimmers throughout the season.
Playa de los Pocillos, at the eastern end of the resort, is a wide, attractive beach that is slightly less frequented than Playa Grande and is backed by a quieter section of the resort with less evening entertainment noise.
The old harbour at the western end of Puerto del Carmen is the most characterful part of the resort — a genuine fishing village quarter where the original Lanzarote character survives alongside the resort development. The restaurants here are among the most authentic on the island.
The harbour promenade is lined with seafood restaurants that have operated in the same locations for decades. Fresh fish — vieja, cherne, lubina, tuna — is cooked simply and served with papas arrugadas and mojo sauces.
These are not tourist-facing establishments but genuine local restaurants that happen to be in the most scenic part of the resort.
The old harbour square hosts a small but lively artisan market on Sunday mornings. Local craftspeople sell ceramics, leather goods, jewellery and Lanzarote wine alongside fresh produce from the island’s farms. It is one of the most pleasant ways to spend a morning of any Puerto del Carmen holiday.
The Avenida de las Playas — the long beachfront boulevard — has the resort’s broadest restaurant selection, ranging from Canarian fish restaurants and traditional Spanish tapas bars to international cuisine covering Italian, Indian, Chinese and reliable British pub food.
Puerto del Carmen is the diving capital of Lanzarote and one of the premier dive destinations in Europe. The island’s clear Atlantic water, exceptional visibility (frequently 20–30 metres), warm year-round temperatures and dramatic volcanic underwater topography combine to create outstanding conditions.
The Museo Atlántico, located 2 kilometres offshore at 12–14 metres depth, is one of the most remarkable dive experiences in the world.
Created by British underwater sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, the museum contains over 300 life-size concrete sculptures of human figures arranged across the seabed in an area covering around 2,500 square metres.
Beyond the museum, Puerto del Carmen’s dive sites include volcanic arches, tunnels, lava formations and an excellent variety of Atlantic marine life — rays, moray eels, barracuda, angel sharks and occasional sea turtles.

Snorkelling from the beach and rocky outcrops around the harbour provides good marine life viewing even without equipment hire. The rocky sections between beaches support shoals of colourful wrasse, damselfish and the occasional octopus in relatively shallow water.
Puerto del Carmen has the liveliest evening and nightlife scene on Lanzarote.
The Avenida de las Playas becomes the resort’s social hub from early evening — restaurants fill quickly from 7pm, bars and clubs build through the evening and the nightlife continues until the early hours in the resort’s dedicated bar zone.
The resort’s nightlife is notably more civilised than the equivalent zones on Tenerife or Gran Canaria — lively without being aggressively commercial, with a good mix of ages and nationalities rather than a purely 18–30 focus.
Most large all-inclusive hotels in Puerto del Carmen run their own evening entertainment programmes — live music, dance shows, quiz nights and themed dinners
Which means Puerto del Carmen holidays with families or those not wanting the commercial resort strip have a full evening programme available within their own hotel.
Puerto del Carmen is the best-located base on Lanzarote for island excursions. Timanfaya National Park is approximately 25 minutes by car — the camel rides and the El Diablo restaurant on geothermal heat are among the most distinctive experiences of any Lanzarote holiday.
The six César Manrique sites — Jameos del Agua, Fundación César Manrique, Mirador del Río, Jardin de Cactus, Monumento al Campesino and the Timanfaya restaurant — are all reachable in a full day’s drive from Puerto del Carmen.
The Papagayo beaches near Playa Blanca are 30 minutes south — widely considered the finest beaches on the island. The boat trip to La Graciosa island from Orzola in the north is approximately one hour from the resort.
Puerto del Carmen holidays offer the widest range of accommodation on Lanzarote. The resort runs from low-cost aparthotels at the eastern Matagorda end through to well-appointed four-star hotels concentrated in the central resort strip close to Playa Grande.

The central strip between Playa Grande and the old harbour is the most sought-after location — within walking distance of the beach, the harbour restaurants and the evening entertainment on the Avenida de las Playas.

The wind can be a factor, particularly in summer, when the Saharan calima wind occasionally affects conditions for short periods. The resort’s south-facing orientation provides good natural shelter from the north-easterly trade winds that affect the east coast of the island.

Puerto del Carmen is the largest and most complete resort on Lanzarote, and for most visitors — particularly first-timers — it is the best choice. The combination of the longest beach, widest restaurant selection, best diving and shortest airport transfer is hard to beat.
Those seeking a quieter atmosphere may prefer Playa Blanca in the south or Costa Teguise in the north, both of which are less commercialised than Puerto del Carmen.
Puerto del Carmen holidays are excellent for families. Playa Grande’s long sandy beach has calm, shallow conditions suitable for young children. The wide range of all-inclusive hotels with kids’ clubs and pool facilities is excellent throughout the resort.

The Museo Atlántico is the world’s first underwater sculpture museum, located on the seabed 2 kilometres off Puerto del Carmen at 12–14 metres depth. Created by British artist Jason deCaires Taylor, it contains over 300 concrete human figure sculptures arranged across 2,500 square metres of seabed.
It is accessible by snorkelling at low tide from glass-bottom boats, or by scuba dive — the most complete experience. All major dive centres in Puerto del Carmen run regular visits to the museum.
