Lefkada holidays combine extraordinary natural beauty with a relaxed Ionian island atmosphere that appeals to a wide range of UK travellers. The island is famous above all for Porto Katsiki – a beach of breathtaking drama where brilliant white limestone cliffs plunge to vivid turquoise water – but there is much more to discover. Green mountains, charming villages, world-class windsurfing and a yacht-filled harbour at Nidri all contribute to Lefkada’s enduring appeal.
Unlike most Greek islands, Lefkada is connected to the Greek mainland by a causeway and a small floating bridge, which makes it accessible by road as well as by air. This gives visitors more flexibility and means the island has a pleasantly authentic character – not entirely dependent on tourism in the way that some more isolated islands can be. Lefkada is ideal for couples, families, beach lovers and anyone with a passion for watersports.
Porto Katsiki is genuinely one of the most stunning beaches in Greece – and Greece has many extraordinary beaches. Accessed via a long staircase descending from clifftop car parks, the beach itself is a small crescent of pale pebbles and coarse sand enclosed by towering white limestone cliffs. The water is an almost unreal shade of turquoise and sapphire, impossibly clear and beautifully cool even in the height of summer.
The beach faces west and catches the afternoon sun, making it spectacular in the late hours when the light plays off the white cliffs. A small beach bar operates in season, but facilities are limited – bring everything you need for the day. The drive or taxi ride to Porto Katsiki through the island’s southern interior is itself scenic, passing through quiet villages and olive groves before the dramatic clifftop reveal.
Nidri is Lefkada’s most developed resort, situated on the island’s sheltered east coast looking out towards a scattering of small islands. The waterfront is lively in summer, with a marina packed with sailing yachts and motor boats, a good selection of tavernas, bars and shops, and a pleasant beach area. It is the natural hub for those based in self-catering accommodation or hotels in this part of the island.
From Nidri, boat trips depart regularly for the nearby islands of Meganisi, Skorpios, Kastos and Kalamos. Meganisi in particular is well worth a day trip – its tiny harbours, crystal-clear water and authentic tavernas serving fresh-caught fish give a wonderful glimpse of traditional Greek island life at its most unspoilt. Waterfalls at Dimosari gorge near Nidri are another local attraction worth seeking out.
Vassiliki, at the southern tip of Lefkada’s east coast, is one of Europe’s premier windsurfing destinations. The geography of the bay creates a unique thermal wind pattern – calm mornings giving way to consistent afternoon breezes that build to perfect windsurfing conditions. Beginners benefit from the glassy morning water, while experienced riders arrive in the afternoon for the more challenging conditions.
The village of Vassiliki itself is charming – a small working port with a pebble beach, a handful of tavernas and a relaxed atmosphere well suited to those who come primarily for the water. Beyond windsurfing, the bay is popular for kitesurfing and sailing. The mountainous interior behind Vassiliki is beautiful and can be explored on foot or by hire car on a day away from the beach.
Agios Nikitas on Lefkada’s north-west coast is one of the island’s most appealing small resorts. The village tumbles down a hillside to a small sandy beach, its traditional architecture largely unspoilt and its atmosphere genuinely Greek. A pedestrian-only lane through the village is lined with tavernas, kafeneions and small shops.
The beach at Agios Nikitas is small but beautiful, with clear water and a sheltered position. A short water taxi ride from here reaches Milos beach – a spectacular cove backed by white cliffs and reachable only by sea or a rough footpath, which adds to its appeal as a hidden gem. The sunsets from Agios Nikitas looking out over the Ionian Sea are particularly memorable.
Lefkada Town at the island’s northern end is the administrative capital and a pleasant base for those wanting easy access to both the mainland and the beaches of the south. The town was largely rebuilt after earthquakes in the 20th century, but retains a distinctive character with brightly painted corrugated iron facades on many older buildings – a local building tradition designed to withstand seismic activity.
The causeway connecting Lefkada to the mainland crosses a shallow lagoon full of birdlife and fishing boats. A small floating bridge – one of Greece’s few remaining – opens periodically to allow sailing boats through. The lagoon itself is a lovely feature, with a long promenade popular with locals for evening walks and cycling. The town’s salt marshes attract migratory birds in spring and autumn.
Meganisi, the largest of the islands visible from Nidri’s waterfront, is one of the Ionian Sea’s best-kept secrets. With just three small villages, no large hotels and a handful of excellent waterfront tavernas, it offers an authentic and unhurried experience that contrasts with the more developed resorts of Lefkada itself. The water around Meganisi is exceptionally clear and ideal for snorkelling.
The island’s sea caves – particularly the impressive Papanikolis Cave, one of the largest in Greece – are accessible by boat from Nidri and provide a dramatic spectacle. Local fishermen in the village of Spartochori still mend nets on the quayside while cats doze in the shade – a scene entirely unchanged from decades past. A day on Meganisi is one of the most rewarding excursions from Lefkada.
The nearest airport to Lefkada is Preveza/Aktion Airport (PVK), approximately 20 km from the island, with a flight time from London of around 3.5 hours. Direct charter flights operate from the UK in summer. Alternatively, fly into Corfu (CFU) or Athens (ATH) and make the onward journey to Lefkada by road – Athens is around a 6-hour drive.
From the airport, taxis and hire cars provide access across the causeway to the island. Car hire is strongly recommended for Lefkada as public transport is limited and the best beaches require independent transport. For peace of mind when booking, always check your holiday is ABTA protected.

Porto Katsiki is widely regarded as the finest beach on Lefkada and one of the best in Greece. Its combination of towering white cliffs, vivid turquoise water and remote location creates a genuinely spectacular setting. It is best visited on a weekday morning to beat the crowds that arrive later in the day.
Other outstanding Lefkada beaches include Egremni – dramatically similar to Porto Katsiki but partially closed due to cliff erosion – and Kathisma, a long sandy beach on the west coast that is easier to access and has more facilities. Pefkoulia beach just south of Agios Nikitas is another beautiful spot well worth visiting.
A hire car is strongly recommended for Lefkada, particularly if you want to visit Porto Katsiki and the west coast beaches. Public buses serve some resorts but are infrequent and do not reach the best beaches. Car hire is affordable and gives you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace.
The island is easy to drive around – roads are generally in good condition, though some tracks to beaches in the south can be rough. A standard car is fine for most purposes. Petrol stations are plentiful in Lefkada Town and Nidri.
Lefkada is best known for Porto Katsiki beach, its world-class windsurfing at Vassiliki, and its beautiful Ionian scenery of green mountains meeting turquoise sea. It is one of the less commercialised of the larger Greek islands and retains a genuinely authentic character in many of its villages.
The island is also known for its connection to the poet Aristotelis Valaoritis and for being the setting of Lefkatas – the white cliff from which the ancient poet Sappho was said to have leapt. Today that cliff, at the island’s southernmost tip, is a dramatic viewpoint used by hang-gliders and a popular stop on scenic drives.
Yes – Lefkada is one of the few Greek islands accessible by road from the Greek mainland, connected by a causeway at its northern tip. From Athens, the drive takes around 5-6 hours via the E55 motorway. This makes Lefkada popular with Greek and European travellers who prefer to combine it with a mainland road trip.
For UK visitors, flying to Preveza or Corfu then hiring a car or taking a transfer is the most practical approach. The causeway itself is a pleasant introduction to the island, crossing a shallow lagoon full of fishing boats before the floating bridge gives access to Lefkada Town.
June and September are the best months for a Lefkada holiday. The sea is warm enough for comfortable swimming, and Porto Katsiki and the west coast beaches are noticeably quieter than during the July-August peak.
July and August are the hottest and busiest months, and also the prime season for windsurfing at Vassiliki thanks to the reliable afternoon winds.
May and October suit visitors who prioritise scenery and quieter roads over guaranteed warm swimming. Most tourist facilities close between November and April.
