A boat trip to the Giftun Islands is the single most popular excursion from Hurghada and justifiably so. The national park islands, a 30–40 minute boat ride from the resort, have some of the finest accessible reef snorkelling in the Red Sea — shallow bays teeming with colourful fish, clear turquoise water over pristine coral, and the opportunity to swim alongside sea turtles that nest on the island beaches. Most boat trips include snorkelling equipment, a barbecue lunch on the beach and unlimited time in the water.
Dolphin-watching trips are another popular option — spinner dolphins are regularly seen in the open water between Hurghada and the offshore reefs, and dedicated dolphin boats head out at sunrise for the best chances of encounters. Several operators also offer submarine or semi-submarine trips that allow non-swimmers to view the reef life through underwater observation windows.
For those who want to venture beyond the resort, quad bike and jeep safari excursions into the Eastern Desert behind Hurghada provide a dramatic contrast to the beach and reef world. A sunset camel ride in the desert, an evening at a Bedouin camp with traditional food and music, or a full-day 4×4 safari to remote desert valleys and hot springs are all available as organised day trips from the resort.
Hurghada’s location on the Red Sea coast makes it a practical base for longer excursions into the heart of ancient Egypt. Luxor — the world’s greatest open-air museum — is approximately 4 hours by road across the Eastern Desert, and overnight excursions or fly-drive day trips to the Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple and the Temple of Hatshepsut are available from most Hurghada hotels. Cairo is approximately 6 hours by road from Hurghada — a long day trip but manageable with an early start — or accessible by a short domestic flight. The Giza Pyramids and the Egyptian Museum can be covered in a full day, giving Hurghada-based visitors a taste of Egypt’s most iconic ancient monuments without committing to a city stay.
Closer to the resort, the Coptic Monastery of St Anthony — the oldest functioning Christian monastery in the world — is located in the Eastern Desert mountains approximately 1 hour 30 minutes from Hurghada and makes a fascinating and unusual half-day excursion. The monastery has been continuously inhabited since the 4th century and its ancient church contains remarkable Coptic frescoes.
Hurghada International Airport (HRG) is one of the best-connected Egyptian airports to the UK, with direct flights from London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds Bradford and other regional airports operated by easyJet, Jet2, TUI and various charter carriers. Flight time from London is approximately 5 hours. Year-round scheduled and seasonal charter services make Hurghada accessible throughout the year.
The airport is located approximately 5 kilometres south of central Hurghada, with transfers to most hotels taking between 15 minutes and 1 hour depending on location along the resort strip. Package holidays typically include a shared coach transfer. Car hire is available but less commonly used than in European destinations — most visitors find organised excursions and taxis sufficient for their needs.

Hurghada is a genuine year-round destination with very little seasonal variation in sunshine hours. October to April offers the most comfortable temperatures for sightseeing and outdoor activities (25–30°C), while May to September brings intense heat (35–40°C) that is best managed by staying close to the water. The sea is swimmable and warm throughout the year.
Winter (November–February) is particularly popular with UK visitors escaping cold weather at home. Prices are generally good in the winter months and the resort is noticeably quieter than in summer. The diving is excellent year-round, with visibility typically best in the cooler months.
Hurghada is considered one of Egypt’s safest tourist destinations and has an established track record of welcoming UK visitors over several decades. Absolutely — Hurghada offers an excellent holiday for visitors who have no interest in diving. The beaches and pools, the boat trips to Giftun Island, the watersports, the desert excursions and the day trips to Luxor all provide plenty of variety. Snorkelling from the beach or on a glass-bottomed boat gives non-divers a taste of the reef world without any training or equipment.
The all-inclusive hotel format works particularly well for non-diving visitors who want a relaxed beach holiday. The range of entertainment, restaurants and facilities within most Hurghada hotels keeps guests comfortable and engaged without the need to venture far from the property.
Luxor is approximately 290 kilometres from Hurghada via the main desert road, taking around 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours by coach or private car. Overnight excursions depart from Hurghada in the evening, arrive in Luxor for a full day of sightseeing including the Valley of the Kings and Karnak Temple, and return the following morning.
Day trips by air are also available — domestic flights from Hurghada to Luxor take around 40 minutes and allow a comfortable day of sightseeing without an overnight stay. Most Hurghada hotels and excursion desks can book both road and fly-drive Luxor excursions, and combining Red Sea relaxation with a day among the Pharaonic monuments is one of Egypt’s great holiday experiences.
