Playa del Inglés has one of the largest concentrations of restaurants and bars of any resort in the Canary Islands. Car hire is useful if you plan to explore beyond the resort zone. The fast GC-1 motorway connects the southern resorts to the airport and the capital in under 40 minutes, and the inland roads to the Roque Nublo, Tejeda, and the Fataga ravine are straightforward to navigate.

Playa del Inglés is the entertainment capital of Gran Canaria’s south — a resort built for maximum sociability. The Yumbo Centrum, a multi-storey open-air shopping and entertainment complex at the heart of the resort, contains over 200 bars, restaurants, clubs and shops operating across three floors. The complex operates on a Spanish social schedule — restaurants fill from 8pm, the clubs don’t start until midnight and the atmosphere builds towards dawn. Yumbo is particularly well known as a hub for Gran Canaria’s significant LGBT community.
The Kasbah and Cita shopping centres provide alternative evening focal points within the resort, each with their own cluster of restaurants and bars. The beach promenade (Paseo Costa Canaria) extending west towards Maspalomas and east towards San Agustín is well-lit and busy with evening strollers throughout the summer season. The resort’s larger hotels typically offer their own evening entertainment programmes for guests not wishing to venture out.
The beach at Playa del Inglés runs continuously from the Maspalomas lighthouse in the west to the San Agustín resort area in the east — a 6-kilometre stretch of golden sand backed by the promenade. The beach is wide, flat and regularly cleaned. The western sections nearest the lighthouse are the most atmospheric, closest to the dune reserve and most popular with the nudist community that has a long-standing presence in this area. The eastern sections near the Riu hotels are more family-oriented.
Sun lounger and parasol concessions operate along the full length of the beach. Watersports centres along the promenade offer jet skiing, parasailing, kayaking and pedalo hire. The beach bar kiosks are open from dawn to dusk. The beach is at its most crowded in July and August, with the shoulder months of May, June, September and October offering a significantly more comfortable beach experience.
Gran Canaria’s Canarian tax-free status (the IGIC tax is significantly lower than VAT) makes it worthwhile to compare prices on electronics, watches, perfumes and spirits. The duty-free shops in the Yumbo and Kasbah centres are the main destination for price-conscious shoppers. The weekly Thursday market at the Maspalomas end of the resort is one of the largest in Gran Canaria and well worth a morning visit for handicrafts, clothing and local food products.
Despite its reputation as an adult entertainment resort, Playa del Inglés works well for families with older children and teenagers. The beach is excellent, the resort is flat and easily navigable, and the commercial infrastructure means everything from pharmacies to international cuisine is within easy reach. Families with younger children typically prefer the calmer, quieter environments of San Agustín or Maspalomas, but teenagers appreciate the energy of Playa del Inglés’s promenade and commercial strip.
The Holiday World Maspalomas amusement park on the eastern edge of the resort — adjacent to the Riu Hotels — provides fairground rides, a bowling alley, mini-golf, a go-kart track and an extensive arcade for families seeking structured entertainment beyond the beach. The park operates primarily in the evenings and is one of the most popular family diversions in the south of Gran Canaria.
Playa del Inglés’s central position in Gran Canaria’s south makes it the most convenient base for island excursions. Organised coach trips to the interior mountain villages, to the Roque Nublo volcanic plug, to Las Palmas and to the northwest coast all depart from central collection points in the resort. The round-island bus tour covering Las Palmas, the north coast and returning via the interior mountains is one of the best ways to understand Gran Canaria’s extraordinary geographic diversity in a single day.
The boat excursion from Puerto Mogán (accessible by public bus from Playa del Inglés in 90 minutes) covers the remote cove beaches of the southwest coast that are inaccessible by road. The trip is particularly popular in late spring and autumn when the coast is at its clearest. Glass-bottom catamarans departing from Playa del Inglés’s Paseo Marítimo pier provide a shorter but still rewarding coastal cruise for those without the time for the longer excursion.
Playa del Inglés can work well for families, particularly those with older children and teenagers. The beach is excellent, the resort has a wide range of restaurants covering all tastes, and the proximity to the Maspalomas dunes, Aqua Sur water park, and Holiday World fairground provides good family entertainment options. The resort itself is very lively and busy, which some families enjoy.
Families with young children who prefer a quieter atmosphere may find Puerto Rico or San Agustín more suitable bases. Playa del Inglés has a strong nightlife scene concentrated around the Yumbo area, but the resort is large enough that the quieter, hotel-zone end of the beach feels quite separate from the entertainment district.

The GC-1 motorway provides a fast, direct route between the airport and the resort, and taxis are available at the airport at all hours. Most UK package holidays include return transfers.
The resort is also well connected by local bus to the rest of the south coast, and regular services run to Maspalomas, San Agustín, and Puerto Rico. For day trips to Las Palmas or the mountain interior, car hire from the airport or from local agencies in the resort is the most flexible option.
