Puerto Rico is around 20 km west and easily reached by bus or car for water sports and boat trips.

The Maspalomas Dunes Nature Reserve is the defining landscape feature of Gran Canaria’s south — 400 hectares of spectacular sand dunes rolling to the sea. The lagoon (Charca de Maspalomas) immediately behind the lighthouse is a protected bird habitat where migratory African species rest during the autumn and spring migration. Flamingos, egrets, herons and numerous waders use the lagoon year-round. The lagoon is visible from the beachside promenade and binoculars are worthwhile for serious birdwatchers.
Sioux City Wild West theme park near San Agustín is Gran Canaria’s most distinctive family attraction — a full-size recreation of an American frontier town with daily shows featuring horse riding, gunfights and can-can performances. The park operates in the evenings as well as during the day, with barbecue dinners and cowboy shows in an outdoor arena. Transfer buses run from most Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés hotels.
Maspalomas is part of a continuous resort strip that flows without clear boundary into Playa del Inglés to the east and Meloneras to the west. The Paseo Costa Canaria promenade connects all three resorts along the seafront and provides a pleasant car-free walking and cycling route between them. Hire bikes are available from several outlets along the promenade. The walk from the lighthouse end of Maspalomas to the centre of Playa del Inglés takes around 45 minutes on the flat, well-lit promenade.
The Yumbo Centrum in Playa del Inglés — technically Maspalomas’s immediate neighbour — is the largest and most concentrated entertainment complex in the south, with over 200 restaurants, bars and clubs concentrated in a single open-air shopping centre. The atmosphere in Yumbo is raucous in the evenings and the centre has a long-established connection with the LGBT community in Gran Canaria’s south.
Campo de Golf de Maspalomas, adjacent to the dunes reserve, is one of the oldest and most celebrated golf courses in the Canary Islands — opened in 1968 and redesigned in the 1990s to a championship standard. The 18-hole course plays through palm-lined fairways at the edge of the dune landscape with the lighthouse visible throughout.
