Los Angeles holidays offer something no other American city can quite replicate — the combination of world-class beaches, a legendary entertainment industry, extraordinary cultural institutions and year-round sunshine, all within a single sprawling metropolis. In a single day you can visit the world’s finest art collection at the Getty, walk the Hollywood Walk of Fame and watch the sun set over the Pacific from Venice Beach.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame stretches 1.3 miles along Hollywood Boulevard, embedded with more than 2,700 brass stars honouring screen legends. Grauman’s Chinese Theatre sits at its heart — press your hands into the celebrity handprints in the forecourt and look out for costumed characters willing to pose for a photo.
The Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard is where the Academy Awards take place every February. The TCL Chinese Theatre hosts major premieres throughout the year. Griffith Observatory, 10 minutes above Hollywood, offers one of the finest views over the LA basin — and on clear days you can see all the way to the Pacific.
The Hollywood Sign hike takes around two hours return from the Hollyridge Trail — a moderate climb with excellent views of the sign and the city below. Start early to avoid the midday heat and the worst of the weekend crowds.
The Mount Hollywood Trail from Griffith Observatory is a gentler alternative that provides excellent views of the sign without the steeper sections. Both are included in most Los Angeles holidays itineraries for the views alone.
Venice Beach is LA’s most characterful stretch of coastline. The boardwalk is a non-stop procession of street performers, bodybuilders at Muscle Beach, artisan stalls and rollerbladers. Wander the canals that give Venice its name — they’re quiet, leafy and beautiful in the early morning when the rest of the boardwalk is still asleep.
Santa Monica offers a more polished version of the beach experience. The pier with its Pacific Park funfair, the Third Street Promenade for shopping and the farmers’ market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings make it a full-day destination for Los Angeles holidays. Sunset at the pier — with the Ferris wheel lit against an orange sky — is one of the great LA moments.
Los Angeles punches well above its weight culturally. The Getty Center sits on a hilltop in Brentwood with free admission, extraordinary architecture by Richard Meier and a permanent collection that includes Van Gogh’s Irises and Rembrandt’s The Abduction of Europa. Allow half a day minimum — the gardens alone justify the visit.
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is the largest art museum in the western US. The Urban Light installation outside — 202 restored street lamps — is as photographed as anything in the building. The Natural History Museum, the California Science Center (home to Space Shuttle Endeavour) and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) round out a cultural offering that rivals any American city.
Silver Lake and Los Feliz are LA’s creative heartland — independent coffee shops, record stores, vintage clothing and outstanding restaurants in converted bungalows. Koreatown never sleeps and offers some of the city’s best late-night food. Culver City has emerged as a serious arts district with galleries, breweries and extraordinary adaptive-reuse architecture.
For luxury shopping, Beverly Hills and the Rodeo Drive corridor remain a spectacle regardless of whether you’re buying. The Meatpacking District equivalent in LA is the Melrose/West Hollywood strip — boutiques, gallery spaces and some of the city’s most fashionable restaurants and cocktail bars.

Los Angeles has one of the world’s most diverse and inventive food cultures. The city’s huge Korean population has produced Koreatown’s extraordinary late-night dining scene — Korean barbecue restaurants and karaoke bars stay open until 4am. Little Tokyo in downtown offers excellent ramen, sushi and izakaya culture. Boyle Heights is LA’s oldest Mexican neighbourhood and the source of the city’s finest tacos.
The farmers’ markets are a highlight of any Los Angeles holiday. The Original Farmers Market at Third and Fairfax has operated since 1934 and remains one of the city’s best lunch spots. The Santa Monica Farmers Market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings is one of the finest in California — top chefs shop here every week.
The Los Angeles food truck scene is world-class. Roy Choi’s Kogi BBQ, which fused Korean barbecue with Mexican tacos, launched the modern food truck movement from LA in 2008. Tracking the city’s best trucks via social media is a legitimate sightseeing activity.
Malibu, 30 miles north of Santa Monica along Pacific Coast Highway, stretches for 21 miles of Pacific coastline backed by the Santa Monica Mountains. The Getty Villa — a museum dedicated to Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities set in a re-creation of a Roman country house — sits on a cliff overlooking the Pacific. Zuma Beach, at Malibu’s northern end, is one of the finest stretches of sand in Southern California.
Santa Barbara is two hours north by car or Amtrak Pacific Surfliner and makes an excellent full-day or overnight trip from Los Angeles. Known as the American Riviera, it has a beautiful Spanish Colonial downtown, excellent wine country in the Santa Ynez Valley (the area depicted in the film Sideways) and superb seafood on the harbour.
Palm Springs, two hours east through the San Gorgonio Pass, offers mid-century modern architecture, a famous aerial tramway to the San Jacinto Mountains and a lively arts and design scene. The Coachella Valley’s date farms and cactus gardens add an unexpected agricultural dimension to a desert city break.
Universal Studios Hollywood, 30 minutes from central LA by Metro, offers a working studio backlot tour alongside its theme park attractions. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Jurassic World and the newly expanded Nintendo World are the headline experiences. The Studio Tour tram ride through active backlot sets — including the Bates Motel from Psycho and the Jaws lake — remains one of Hollywood’s most interesting inside-access experiences.
The Broad in downtown Los Angeles is a contemporary art museum that opened in 2015, housing one of the most significant private collections of post-war and contemporary art in the world. Jeff Koons, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cindy Sherman and Roy Lichtenstein are all represented in depth. Entry is free (timed tickets required) and the building itself — by architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro — is a work of art.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic plays at the Walt Disney Concert Hall — Frank Gehry’s stainless steel masterpiece in downtown LA — from September to June. The building is as remarkable to walk around outside as it is to experience a concert within. Free guided tours operate on selected weekday mornings. The nearby Broad Museum, MOCA Grand and the Hauser & Wirth gallery make downtown’s Grand Avenue corridor one of the most concentrated cultural streets in the western United States.
Disneyland Resort in Anaheim is 35 miles south of central Los Angeles via I-5 and is included in many Los Angeles holiday packages as a day option. The original Disneyland park opened in 1955 and retains Sleeping Beauty Castle at its heart, surrounded by lands that Walt Disney himself walked through. Disney California Adventure Park, which occupies the original Disneyland car park, contains the Avengers Campus and Cars Land alongside the extraordinary Radiator Springs Racers attraction.
A minimum of five nights lets you cover the main areas — Hollywood, Santa Monica and Venice, one major museum, one neighbourhood and a day trip up the Pacific Coast Highway. Seven nights is the sweet spot for Los Angeles holidays.
With seven nights you can add the Getty, a proper exploration of two or three neighbourhoods and still have time to sit on the beach without feeling rushed. LA rewards slower travel more than most American cities.
A car gives maximum flexibility and unlocks day trips to Malibu, Joshua Tree and beyond. However, Los Angeles holidays are absolutely achievable without one — the Metro B Line runs from Union Station through Hollywood to the Westside, and Uber and Lyft are excellent for shorter trips.
If you drive, use Waze or Google Maps for real-time traffic routing and avoid the 405 freeway during rush hour. Book an international driving permit before leaving the UK.
Hollywood or West Hollywood gives first-timers the best combination of central location, public transport access and proximity to major landmarks. Santa Monica is the best choice if beach access is your priority for Los Angeles holidays.
Downtown LA suits those who prefer urban density and walkability. Hotels here are 20–30% cheaper than Hollywood or beachside properties for comparable quality, and the Grand Central Market and Broad Museum are outstanding.
June Gloom is a real coastal weather phenomenon in Los Angeles during June — marine layer clouds keep beach areas overcast until midday, burning off by early afternoon. It affects Santa Monica and Venice more than inland areas like Hollywood.
