Rocky Mountain National Park is just 70 miles from the city centre, with world-class hiking, elk and black bear sightings, and some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in North America.
Denver itself has transformed dramatically in recent years. Emerald Lake Trail (3.6 miles return, moderate) passes three lakes with progressively more dramatic mountain backdrops. For experienced hikers, the Flattop Mountain trail (8.8 miles return) reaches the tundra and provides extraordinary 360-degree views across the park.
Denver holidays benefit from extraordinary outdoor activity options within easy driving distance of the city. Red Rocks Amphitheatre — a naturally formed outdoor concert venue carved into 300-million-year-old red sandstone formations — is one of the most spectacular live music venues on earth. Even without a concert, the geological formations are worth the 15-mile drive from the city.
Clear Creek Canyon, 30 minutes west of Denver, offers excellent white-water rafting from May to July when snowmelt fills the creek. Denver’s city centre rewards a day or two of exploration before or after mountain excursions. The Denver Art Museum houses over 70,000 works with particular strengths in Native American art and an outstanding architecture collection — the building itself, designed by Daniel Libeskind, is a striking titanium-clad angular structure.
The 16th Street Mall is a pedestrianised shopping and dining corridor through the city centre, with free shuttle buses running its full length. Larimer Square is Denver’s oldest block, converted into an excellent restaurant and cocktail bar destination. The Rino (River North) arts district is the hippest neighbourhood — galleries, murals, breweries and outstanding restaurants in renovated warehouses.

Breckenridge Ski Resort is 80 miles from the city — a purpose-built ski town with 187 trails, five peaks and one of the most reliable snow records in North America. Denver is the gateway to some of the finest skiing in North America.
